5 habits for a brighter smile

A bright smile is built far more in your bathroom than in the dental chair. The good news: the habits that keep teeth white are the same ones that keep them healthy. Here are the five our hygienists recommend most.

1. Brush for two full minutes, twice a day Most people brush for less than 50 seconds. Use a soft-bristled or electric brush, hold it at a 45-degree angle to the gum line, and move in gentle circles rather than scrubbing hard. Aggressive brushing wears down enamel and exposes the darker layer beneath — making teeth look more yellow, not less.

2. Clean between your teeth every day A toothbrush reaches only about 60% of each tooth's surface. Floss or interdental brushes remove the plaque and food that cause staining and gum inflammation in the tight spaces a brush can't touch. Once a day, before bed, is enough.

3. Rinse after coffee, tea and red wine You don't have to give up the things you love. Simply swish with water after dark drinks, and wait about 30 minutes before brushing — enamel is temporarily softened by acidity, and brushing too soon can do more harm than good.

4. Don't mistake "whitening" toothpaste for whitening Most whitening toothpastes only remove surface stains with mild abrasives; they can't change the actual shade of your teeth. For a real, lasting change, a supervised in-office or take-home treatment is safer and far more effective.

5. Keep your professional cleanings A hygiene visit every six months removes hardened tartar that no home routine can shift, and lets us catch small problems early. It's the single most cost-effective thing you can do for both the look and the health of your smile.
